Chapter 157 Change and Self
Hermione's conversation with the two headmasters seemed to have given her a deeper understanding of her own heart.
Suddenly, she could clearly hear a second heartbeat during her daily incantations. The heartbeat was strong and powerful, but unlike the description in the book, the heartbeat she heard also had a hazy echo. Rather than a heartbeat,
It sounded even more like the sound of a stone striking an empty cave, crisp and far-reaching.
She didn't know what this meant, and when she went to Professor McGonagall, she didn't get any useful conclusions. Her body was perfectly normal, and there was no sign of any abnormality in the progress of her Animagus.
"James and his team improved human shapeshifting, which could potentially lead to benign mutations in your animal forms."
Therefore, I think this may not be a bad thing. McGonagall, unusually, did not show any worry, or perhaps in the field of transfiguration, she trusted her own judgment more.
So Hermione went to look through "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" and various other books about animals in the library.
However, it doesn't mention any animal whose heartbeat sounds like a stone rattling.
In the end, she simply gave up. Since she didn't feel any discomfort and Professor McGonagall thought it was fine, she would proceed with the normal steps, and she would accept whatever happened.
Compared to this unexpected little incident, she was more curious about what Neville was thinking.
Ever since he received the Thunderbird feather from her, the boy seemed to have completely forgotten about it. He went to class, did his homework, ate, and then went to the Pensieve to suffer, just like everyone else. Hermione was prepared for him to ignite it at any time, but he was in no hurry. Hermione almost suspected that he didn't even have the feather with him, but obviously every time she asked, Neville could immediately pull it out of his pocket.
"You're not really going to wait until the graduation banquet, are you?"
"I just haven't figured it out yet, I haven't figured out what the right time is." He said this seriously, perhaps he really was trying to figure out what the right time was.
Fortunately, the accident happened even faster. In a Charms class, Neville was paired with Seamus to practice the Happy Charm, but heaven knows what Finegan did, a huge fireball grazed Neville's face and rose to the ceiling.
Although he himself was unharmed, the tail feathers of the Thunderbird in his arms were accidentally ignited.
"Oh my god, Navei, you've picked a good time!" Ron exclaimed, his mouth agape as he watched the chubby boy fluttering his feathers in vain, trying to extinguish the flames.
Hermione stared at the slowly rising rain cloud and the thunder brewing within it, and without hesitation, immediately stood up and asked Professor Flitwick for leave.
"Professor, I'm afraid I'll have to go out temporarily."
Many professors had heard about her Animagus activities, so she left the classroom without any hindrance.
She quickly led the rain cloud away, using her staff to guide it away from McGonagall and Lily, who were in class.
Even in the hallway, you could still hear Flitwick exclaiming, "These students nowadays are amazing, and she's only in second grade!"
When she re-entered the Room of Requirement, she opened the dark room that only she could open, where a small, solitary bottle of crystal potion sat alone.
A small amount of blood-red potion was correctly generated inside.
"Great! No problems!" She breathed a sigh of relief, though her unusually rapid heartbeat still made her a little worried. Just then, the door behind her opened again, and Fenfen hurriedly walked in with McGonagall and Lily. They had both paused their classes to let the students study on their own.
McGonagall looked around and said, "No, this isn't spacious enough. If you turned into an elephant or a whale, you'd be crushed to death!"
As she spoke, she directed the Room of Requirement to expand, transforming it in an instant into a spacious room almost the size of a Quidditch pitch, with the high ceiling plunging into darkness, making it almost impossible to see anything.
The lone, rolling rain cloud, flashing with lightning, resembled a clump of black cotton.
She then looked at Hermione: "How are you feeling right now? Remember, stay calm, don't resist or panic, accept the change!"
Hermione nodded calmly.
"After drinking the potion, you will see your Animagus form, which will be accompanied by intense pain, but this is normal." She repeated the key points again and again, afraid that the girl would forget them on the spot.
Lily took her hand: "Even a reckless idiot like James can do it, I believe you can definitely do it too."
Hermione smiled at the two of them.
"I'm starting!"
She pointed the tip of her staff at her heart and chanted the incantation again with practiced ease: "Amado, Animo, Animado, Animagus!" Then she drank the potion from the crystal bottle in one gulp.
The next moment, the heartbeat, which was as hard and clear as a stone, suddenly became enormous, and every corner of my body, every hair, instantly responded with intense pain.
Her own heartbeat intertwined with that empty, distant heartbeat, as if they were competing to see who could make the louder, who could be more resonant.
Gradually, she could only hear these two sounds.
McGonagall and Lily were watching her intently, afraid that something might happen to her at this crucial moment, but fortunately Hermione had a strong tolerance for pain, and this level of pain was not enough to break her will.
Gradually, a ball of light appeared in her field of vision, which should be her Animagus form, but for some reason, no matter how hard she tried, she could not see the things in the light clearly.
"I must get closer to it!"
She told herself this in her heart, and then forced her gaze to be focused on that ball of light.
The light grew increasingly dazzling until the entire field of vision was covered by a shimmering white light.
The next instant, she seemed to detach from her body and appear on a surface of water rippling with gentle waves. A huge full moon, topped with a thick halo, hovered in mid-air, as if it were about to fall at any moment.
"This is my mental world!" With Lockhart's experience, she recognized the place immediately.
"But it seems neither the professor nor Uncle James mentioned that the Animagus can grant access to the spiritual realm?"
She looked around, but the next moment, she saw the little girl who looked exactly like her standing under the giant moon.
"Hi, hello, I'm from another world," the girl said with a smile.
"Who are you?" Hermione asked, frowning. It was the first time she had seen herself like this: fluffy brown hair, slightly protruding front teeth, and round, somewhat childish cheeks that made one want to pinch them.
"I am Hermione Granger. This body belonged to me before you came," the girl said with a smile.
Hermione was shocked: "Impossible! Our souls have long since merged. I have the original body's memories, her emotions, and her joys and sorrows. You cannot exist alone!"
"You could say that," she said, tilting her head.
"I am merely the last remaining trace of Hermione Granger, and I probably wouldn't have materialized if you hadn't been performing Animagus rituals."
