Chapter 394 Between Death Battles
The fortress was very large, with a considerable number of guards on each level.
However, they had not considered how to deal with the enemy coming from above. With the help of the ghosts to entangle them, and the suicide squad focusing on breaking down, the whole process was quite rapid.
Regulus's blood magic impressed his followers, reminding them of his uncle, who had also displayed such prowess on the battlefield.
This gave them even more confidence for the trip, and even amplified the power of the spell.
The further down you go, the stronger the energy resisting magic becomes in the air, and the dark red aura ripples, making everything look dull and dangerous.
"We've reached the ground. The Phenomenon Stabilizer is located in the central room of the fortress."
Under the dim, reddish light, the alarm blared incessantly, but the corridor was filled only with sporadic gunshots and the screams of soldiers; most of them had either been reassigned to the outer perimeter or were dead.
The empty corridor was filled only with haphazardly laid-out bodies; some had died after being impaled by numerous ghosts.
Some were killed by curses and alchemical bombs. But at this point, the ghosts resisted approaching the Phenomenon Stabilizer; they could no longer provide assistance.
"Muggles must still have people protecting the stabilizer, or rather, the commander here won't stand idly by after we've caused such a commotion." The warlock under his command had a serious expression.
Although it only took them about ten minutes to rush here, it was enough for the garrison to mobilize a large force to guard the area.
But now it seems that the path leading to the final room is deserted, as if the place has been abandoned.
Regulus took a deep breath; thanks to the miraculous effects of the blood-replenishing potion, his complexion had improved considerably.
"Check your wand and prepare for battle; a fierce fight is likely ahead."
The closer you get to the stabilizer, the greater the suppression force on the wizard. Spells of the same strength will consume a lot of magic power here, and the success rate will be much lower.
Hermione didn't seem to care much about this; the stabilizer's energy level was even lower than the Golden Snitch's Gleaming Stone at her waist.
Not to mention suppressing her on an energy level.
She played with the small piece of Regulus's blood crystal in her hand, following behind them while explaining the difference between blood magic and the Borderlands Sinner's Thorn magic.
The two have similarities, but their principles and purposes are different. She tried her best to focus her attention on magic and not be affected by the killing around her.
"Boom!" A blast spell blew open the door to the last room, pulling her thoughts back to reality.
"I was right, there really is a troublesome guy behind the door," Regulus said softly, looking at the situation inside.
They were two Muggles, one fat and one thin, with a huge difference in physique.
The fat one was dressed in thick ceramic steel power armor, carrying a half-cannon, half-sword blade in one hand and a door-like alloy shield in the other. The intricate and exquisite patterns on the armor showed that this was not a mass-produced product from a lathe, but a limited edition handcrafted by a fairy master craftsman.
He was clearly more advanced than the mech soldiers who had blocked the wizards on the stairs earlier; he was as solid as a pillar of steel, and his prosthetic eyes, glowing red, coldly stared at the intruder.
"It's finally here. I thought it would be even faster."
The skinny woman spoke. She was a tall, thin woman who wasn't wearing power armor, but her body had almost no flesh and blood left. Mechanical modifications and prosthetics had replaced almost all of her original parts. Her silver arms had large and small protrusions, which seemed to be carrying some kind of weapon. Brass gears were all over her body, turning with a clicking sound.
On the remaining half of her face, one could still discern the skin of a white woman, and her narrow eyes stared sharply at the newcomer.
"This is a nice hunting ground, we can have some fun here." As she spoke, she twisted the wind-up device on her chest, and steam billowed out from her back and legs, as the internal parts of her body began to heat up.
"The Defenders—and the High Witch Hunters—" Regulus frowned as he looked at the two machines that outnumbered flesh and blood before him.
The Defenders are special mechs used by the Soviet Union to protect the city of Paradise and safeguard important leaders. They have extremely high requirements for pilots and their production is very low. They are usually not seen outside of Chelomey.
High-ranking witch hunters are always sent out on very dangerous and dishonorable missions, such as assassinating witches or exterminating Muggle settlements that have taken in witches.
They underwent physical modifications that are unimaginable to ordinary people, making them almost inhuman. They also seem to have serious mental problems, sometimes going insane out of control.
"This is going to be a bit tricky—" the wizard muttered to himself.
Under normal circumstances, a team of elite wizards on their side would be a bit troublesome against two Muggle soldiers, but it would just require a bit more effort.
But now, inside the room of the phenomenon stabilizer, the magic was severely suppressed. He glanced at the gyroscope behind them, which was emitting a dark red fluctuation within the columnar metal restraint device.
That is the goal of this trip.
The enemy commander's placement of these two formidable figures presents an insurmountable obstacle for the wizard. Of course, he believes Sven's side will have the same configuration.
"Target the stabilizer, and keep these two occupied." He said softly, and before he finished speaking, he raised his hand and cast an explosive spell at the slender witch hunter.
But the opponent was very agile, leaping into the air with a push of its legs, using the ceiling for leverage, and then directly pouncing on the wizards.
The silent Defender mech blocked the stabilizer, its large shield deflecting the moderately powerful thunderous explosion. The aftershocks didn't even shake it, let alone affect the sophisticated machinery behind it.
"That sorcerer shall fall into the lake of sulfur!" the witcher screamed in mid-air, a sharp silver blade springing from his arm and aimed straight for Regulus's forehead.
The wizards cast spells one after another, and fiery serpents, deadly lightning, and dark curses came one after another, while layers of iron armor spells were also quickly placed on Regulus's head.
The witch hunter, seemingly without any leverage in mid-air, spun around, exhaling a stream of air that changed direction. Countless sharp fragments shot out from his body, blocking many spells while also burning in mid-air, releasing thick smoke and intense light.
"Boom!" It was the Defender, holding a large shield, his large-caliber cannon shattering countless layers of armor with a single shot, shocking the wizards.
"Watch out for your surroundings!" Regulus shouted, flicking his staff backhand with a close-range knockback spell that narrowly repelled the witch hunter who had silently crept up on them, only for the hunter to instantly disappear back into the thick smoke.
"Watch out for your comrades! Don't give him a chance to pick them off one by one!" he shouted, while the well-trained wizards around him began to blow away the thick smoke.
"This smoke is poisonous!" cried a witch.
The Defender armor integrates a gas mask, so there's no need to worry about poison gas. The witch hunters' body modifications have long allowed them to filter toxins with ease.
The whirlwind swirled together the toxic smoke and fragments of the still-burning unidentified substance, but before it could be thrown out, it was blasted apart by the intense firepower.
"—" Not only were there burning materials on the ground, but large amounts of toxic gas were also surging in from the various ventilation ducts in the room.
"Blow open the door frame and retreat to the corridor. Don't fight inside!" Regulus could only order a retreat, which seemed like a way to regain the upper hand in the battle, but it took them further and further away from the stabilizer.
