Chapter 407 Covering Up a Secret with One's Life
From the thin mist that lightly covered the rubble, slowly rose one by one, dry, transparent skeletal hands draped in black robes.
They emerged silently from the mist, followed by their upper bodies, resembling wraiths or biphasic creatures, and quietly approached Hermione from behind.
Barty's expression remained unchanged; he still looked at the girl in front of him with tension and apprehension, as if the evil spirits about to touch Hermione's head were all fake.
"We've already fled to Mexico, do you really have to kill us all?" He calmly stalled for time while trying to find a way to escape.
Even if those ghosts can't accomplish anything, they can still buy you a fleeting moment of opportunity.
"Is that all?" The witch was disappointed. She had thought she could lure Voldemort out, but the things behind her hadn't really fooled her.
The suppressed spiritual fire beneath the robe stirred restlessly, ready to erupt at any moment and burn all these vengeful spirits to ashes.
"Guardians of the Gods!" a high-pitched female voice rang out from behind.
Then, a slender cat-shaped guardian spirit rushed into the hall with a cry, bringing with it a pure white light, and drove away all the vengeful spirits.
"Miss Granger! I'm here to help you!" Umbridge appeared from the corridor, looking brave, reliable, and powerful, wand in hand.
Her face remained calm as she warily observed Little Barty and the evil spirits: "Be careful, this guy is extremely evil."
"And I have a lot of experience with this!"
The glowing cat strolled around, swishing its tail, while the vengeful spirits surrounded the two, ready to pounce.
Umbridge was overjoyed; she had saved Hermione Granger!
If it weren't for her, this young great wizard from Hogwarts would have been seriously injured due to carelessness in being touched by a vengeful spirit!
She also took this opportunity to showcase her superb physical Patronus Charm! This is a symbol of a righteous wizard! I heard that she is only bad at Patronus Charms, and I just happen to be able to help her!
It's all settled! My departure from my firewatch duties and my assignment in New Hogsmeade are all confirmed!
Unable to show her inner elation, she continued to maintain her reliable and professional demeanor.
"Barty Crouch Jr., I've heard of you. Surrender now, you have nowhere to run!" She selectively ignored the fact that her recklessness had triggered the trap and led to her discovery.
"Miss Granger, you can leave the follow-up interrogations to me. You know, the UMNO party is very professional in this area!"
Barty looked at her as if she were an idiot, and Hermione tried her best not to turn around, lest she get angry at that self-righteous face.
boom!
A cloud of blood mist suddenly exploded from Barty's arm, and the flying pieces of flesh transformed into a foul black slime in mid-air. Some of the slime blocked the surging shards of brilliance behind him, while the rest rushed toward Hermione in front of him.
He sacrificed an arm to create space for his escape!
Apparition is forbidden, but this is his lair, and there are many secret passages leading to the outside world.
It transformed into a wisp of black smoke and rushed towards a corridor behind it.
The vengeful spirits that had been driven back by the guardian deity now surrounded the two again under the command of the dark magic.
"Leave it to me!" Perhaps it was the guardian spirit that gave her great confidence, and Umbridge was determined to stop the ghosts that surrounded her from behind.
Hermione used a spell to dissolve the powerful curse slime while simultaneously casting gravity magic to hold onto Barty, who was trying to escape.
The guardian spirit can suppress all dark and negative spiritual entities. Even if it cannot destroy them, it can ensure its own safety. Umbridge urged the cat to rush towards the vengeful spirits, but this time it failed to succeed!
The silvery light did indeed scorch them, but the mist emanating from the shattered statues continued to repair the bodies of the dead. The evil spirits surged up and almost instantly overwhelmed the guardian's light. Umrichran watched the ghosts rushing towards him, but before he could even cry for help, he was completely obscured by heavy shadows.
Hermione glanced at her amidst her busy schedule, but she didn't have time to save this foolish woman now. Let her take responsibility for her recklessness.
Little Batty can't get away!
A powerful attraction emanated from his palm, so strong that even the smoke couldn't escape, and was even pulled back at an even faster speed.
boom!
Another cloud of blood mist appeared; this time, it was unknown what price the man had paid.
A series of explosions instantly filled the space between the two, and the violent thrust briefly broke free from the shackles of the gravity magic, propelling him into the tunnel at an accelerated speed.
The dark red flames seemed to be squeezed into a ball, suddenly compressed and extinguished at their peak, and Hermione walked through the fire cloud with a calm expression.
He stretched out his palm, pinched and twisted it, facing the pitch-black passage.
It took time. The entire corridor stretched forward from the entrance like a twisted rope. Before Little Barty could escape, the twisted walls closed and collapsed, completely blocking his escape route.
The powerful transformation spell continued to work, and sharp stone spikes grew out one after another from the end of the passage. To survive, Little Barty had no choice but to turn around and go against the flow.
He quickly rushed out of the corridor and stood in front of Hermione, his only escape route blocked by a dense array of thick rock spikes.
At this point, he had lost his left arm and an eye, and half of his face was a bloody mess.
"Is it worth it for you to go to such lengths for Voldemort?" Hermione asked softly.
A handful of spirit fire was sprinkled onto the vengeful spirits behind him, and they screamed as they began to burn, revealing Umbridge lying on the ground, barely clinging to life.
"She's not dead?" Hermione was somewhat surprised by the woman's magical abilities, but only for a moment.
She looked at Barty again. Most dark wizards were bullies who preyed on the weak and feared the strong. They would definitely scatter when disaster struck. She didn't understand why the wizard in front of her was so stubborn.
She silently activated Legilimency, staring at Barty's remaining eye.
Even though he was severely injured, the man's spirit remained strong. All she could see were a jumble of chaotic scenes of sacrifice and murder. The man was using a sophisticated brain-blocking technique to distract himself.
"I still need to use the truth serum—." she thought to herself, and a series of binding spells combined with gravity magic were instantly activated.
"You will never get what you want!" Sensing that there was no chance of escape, a terrifying madness erupted from Little Barty's single eye.
His body suddenly exploded inch by inch into a powerful explosion, filled with the contamination of a curse.
Half of the mountain began to shake, followed by a massive landslide that started from the inside.
With a snap, Hermione appeared on the swaying, muffled cliff, still holding half a dried head and upper body in her hand.
It's Barty Jr.
At the last moment before the man launched his self-destruction, she skillfully and daringly slipped close to his face, sealing the remaining parts of his body with numerous rune chains, before Apparating away.
Unfortunately, Umbridge couldn't be rescued in time. Hopefully, Grindelwald won't come after him for compensation later.
She picked up Little Barty, who was now only a head and half a body. He was basically dead, but he still had a faint consciousness and should be able to find some information in his brain.
The mind-controlling technique was activated again, and as expected, there was almost no resistance. However, his self-destruction burned even his soul, and the remaining things in his mind were rapidly fading away.
Hermione could only hurry and try to find something useful from her chaotic memories.
She saw a shadow slowly rising from the pile of pots in the dark villa in Yellowstone, USA, and saw a fleeting glimpse of black eyes. A burning desire for pursuit and admiration surged in her heart; it was the strongest desire of Little Barty before his death.
A soaring winged serpent displayed miracles over the canyon, and Muggles and wizards bowed before it.
She saw a series of skeletal statues draped in robes of various colors, and in the brazier before the largest black-clad deity, half a broken symbol spun endlessly.
The memories of summer abruptly ended, and much more had vanished with the complete death of Little Barty.
"This guy—even in his dying moments, did everything in his power to protect his master's secret—"
Half of the dried-up body was carelessly left on the ground, and Hermione left this canyon.
