Chapter 6 Chernobyl
Chapter 6 Chernobyl
Time passed quickly, and at night, Hermione sat by the bed, watching the bright white light streaming in from the window—it was the light coming down from the top of the highest tower. Dumbledore wanted all the children to have the moon with them as they fell asleep.
Her long, brown hair was loose, and she curled up in her pajamas like a large, fluffy dumpling.
On his outstretched palm, a ball of fluorescent blue light flickered erratically.
"The power of pyroxene..."
Because the wand selection was to take place the next day, she began to try to use the magical knowledge transmitted by the Faded Ones after returning to her dormitory.
The most basic of these is "Radiant Stone Shards," a spell that almost every mage possesses. It's a spell that releases magical shards to attack enemies.
This is probably the starting point for all the mages in the border region to begin their exploration.
However, the magic of the Radiant Stone originates from the stars. The so-called Radiant Stone is amber that fell from the stars to the human world. After it was sealed in the sky by General Rataen of the Shattered Stars, there were not many places in the borderlands where stars could be seen, and the originally abundant power of the stars also declined.
Therefore, the stargazers gathered in Lake Lienia, the only place with a clear starry sky, and established a magic academy called Realucaria to continue their research. In order to ensure the smooth release of magic, all magicians would wear items carved from sapphire on their staffs or bodies.
Even the Full Moon Queen Renara, who powerfully suppresses the Stargazers with lunar magic and rules the academy, has a flawless gem called "Kalia Blue" embedded in her scepter, which symbolizes the royal power of Kalia.
However, sapphire is not a harmless treasure. For ordinary people, prolonged exposure to the power of stars will gradually wear down their bodies. As stargazers approach the stars, they will transform themselves into half-human, half-sapphire monsters. Of course, only Origin-level mages can usually achieve this.
There are stars in this world too, though we haven't seen them for many years.
"If it were because of the lack of a brilliance stone, it shouldn't be able to release it at all, instead of being in this half-baked state," Hermione frowned.
"Radiant Stone Shard" is too basic. Even without the knowledge passed down from the Faded Ones, she already possesses such basic magic, so there is no issue of insufficient proficiency.
"Starlight!"
This is magic bestowed upon magicians who leave the academy and embark on their journeys. In the starless night, in the sunless depths of the earth, in the imprisoned cell—no matter when or where, the stars are always by the magician's side.
It is also a very basic luminous stone magic, releasing small floating starlight to illuminate the surroundings. It moves with the caster, but it can only be used for lighting.
Fortunately, the release was successful. A bluish star slowly rose above Hermione's head, turning the dormitory blue.
"There's only one possibility: the atmosphere is filled with the power of stars!"
She looked up at the window: "Although the dust clouds have obscured the sky, they can't stop the projection of the stars' power?" As far as the eye could see, those dark green specks of light tumbled in the thick clouds. Perhaps the radioactive dust was no match for the gravity magic of the Shattered Star General? Or perhaps the winter curse that the fairies mixed with nuclear bombs was related to the power of the sapphire?
"But if that's all there is to it, then the magic of radiance can basically be declared over in this world." She pondered in her heart what magic she could still use if she ignored the magic of radiance and relied solely on her own magic power.
"But stars still fall in this world, right? Maybe we can find pyroxene ore?" Hermione recalled the mining magic of the miners in the Crystallization Pit.
"Maybe we should learn from the outdated Exploding Rock Platform technique... Oh right, for close combat, the Kalia Swift Sword is a great value, or perhaps, Blood King Mong's Bloodletting Magic is the Mother of the Unseen..."
That troublesome masochistic evil god, it's best to avoid attracting her.
Lost in these random thoughts, I finally drifted off to sleep.
The next day, the slow-moving Hogwarts finally arrived at their destination—the Chernobyl nuclear reactor ruins.
From a distance, the square building constructed of reinforced concrete had a large hole blasted open at the top, revealing the elven metal frame gleaming with platinum. Even the power of the nuclear explosion, which shattered the thick reinforced concrete, could not completely destroy the elven creations. They were merely twisted and deformed, and the wondrous magic on them was also distorted and altered, filled with deadly radiation and curses.
Although it is just a nuclear power plant, it is actually more like a well-equipped military town, with a dense array of sentry posts, neat family quarters and a large square. Even though it is now severely collapsed, you can still see the scene of its prosperity.
"Without the help of fairies, can Muggles harness the power of the nuclear?" Hermione asked.
She and the other young wizards who needed to participate in the wand selection were already dressed and equipped with enough jerky and cockroach milk for several days, just in case, and gathered in the courtyard of Hogwarts. Apart from Ron and a few other children, most of the young wizards had chosen to go on this adventure, and two second-year students who were lagging behind were discreetly blending into the crowd, not wanting to be watched by the first-years.
"It should still be possible, right?" Harry hesitated. "But maybe we can't master it so soon. According to that Dark Lord, Muggles will eventually master this weapon that can destroy the world, which is why he wants to start a war as soon as possible."
Professor McGonagall paced back and forth in front of a dozen or so young wizards, her face serious, as if she were the one about to go into battle.
As Hogwarts drew closer to the building, the high concentration of radiation stirred up a hazy mist of light on the castle's barrier, making it look both dangerous and alluring.
However, the magical barrier could not completely block the radiation, and everyone could almost feel the scorching heat. Fortunately, Dumbledore was in charge of the castle, and he used some kind of magic. Soon, the discomfort of being directly exposed to the radiation disappeared, until the entire castle stood above the ruins and then sat down with a huge roar. The lower part of the castle, like an inverted mountain, was indestructible, pressing the most dangerous core area underground.
An invisible force hummed, completely halting the reactor's continued radiation.
Everyone steadied themselves. McGonagall, adjusting her hat, announced loudly, "Professor Dumbledore will take complete control of the reactor's power. The professors will also spread out to clear out any dangers in the surrounding area. Your target is anything around the ruins that could potentially be used as material. Many of these items were ejected from the reactor. What you find depends on your own inclinations."
Perhaps it was the effect of the magic, but Hermione didn't feel any change from the so-called radiation. It might be different outside, but she wasn't too worried. The school couldn't possibly send first-year students to their deaths.
McGonagall glanced at her two Gryphon children and continued, "Remember, you only have one day. If you encounter danger, blow the whistle we gave you! The nearest professor will get to you as quickly as possible!"
The other professors also arrived, each carrying a broom. Hermione finally saw Harry's mother, the enlightened Potions professor, whose eyes were almost identical to Harry's.
"Each of you choose a direction, and we'll take you down. Remember, don't crowd together. You have plenty of space to find your own wands, so don't fight with others!" Lucius loudly asserted his presence.
"I want to go there." Harry pointed to a ruin not far away, which should be a sentry post left by Muggles. It was half collapsed, covered with charred marks and white frost covering the scorch marks.
"tendency?"
"tendency!"
Hermione scanned her surroundings, searching for her own "inclination." By this time, many students had already made their decisions and were being led away by the professors.
Then, she saw a forest of dead trees on the other side of the ruins. They had been crushed by the shock wave and died from the radiation. Only the dark branches remained in the frost and snow. Even so, it was clear that before the disaster, it must have been a carefully managed ecological park.
The fairies couldn't help the Muggles rebuild the world, but they could easily build small ecological gardens.
Ironically, the goblins incited hatred among the Muggles, destroyed civilization with a harsh winter, and then hypocritically offered help afterward, as if it had nothing to do with them.
"Professor, I want to go there," Hermione said to McGonagall, pointing in the direction.
The latter nodded and helped her onto the broom.
Harry, carried by his mother, flew to the other side. The two waved to each other in the biting cold wind, wishing each other well. Oh, and Ron was there too, watching from the courtyard.
